  inam ul rehman Breaking 21-year-old institutional monopoly As July 31, 2026, approached, there was only one concern for the employees of the Educational Multimedia Research Centre ( EMRC ): would we see a new director, or would the old regime continue. We went home in a conundrum. The University of Kashmir didn’t issue any notice about who will take charge of our centre. On August 03, as we entered our office premises, rumour was that Prof Syed Muzzaffar Andrabi, dean engineering college, had been nominated as the new director. We waited throughout Monday to receive him but neither did he come, nor was the order issued. My colleagues’ shoulders drooped and they became apprehensive that the old regime had the power to rescind any order of the University! GK declares old journalism degree is dead: Will its 4-month course turn the tide?

inam ul rehman    Kashmir Valley ’s largest circulating English newspaper the Greater Kashmir ’s 4-month journalism course has raked a storm among the professionals and educational institutions. Taking a dig at 2 years regular degree courses, GK writes: “The new 4-month multimedia journalism course is not about abstract theory or outdated textbooks. It’s about real skills — shooting videos, editing content, writing compelling news stories, doing interviews, copyediting , anchoring , scripting, and learning how to work across digital platforms .”   It is the first of its kind initiative by any publishing house in Jammu and Kashmir , and one has to say it is a good and much needed one .    The journalism courses taught in colleges and universities of J&K are archaic, and mostly taught by people who have no or little experience of the field.
